Episode 81. You Bring Me Closer to God: Se7en (1995)

From the Gothic urban landscape, to narrative switch-a-roos, to entitled male rage, David Fincher’s Se7en is much more than a morality-wielding killer with a penchant for… unboxings. In this episode, Andrea and Alex delve into the movie’s complicated moral codes, the history of detective fiction and the dangers of having a God-complex.

Thank you, Andrea and Alex, for your thoughtful analysis and intelligent care for films. I’d not seen Se7en for many years and definitely didn’t recognize the intention behind the characters traveling through large, ominous spaces. You both really are gifts for all of us film fans, reigniting interest in cinema that may have collected dust by time and shining a light on nuances that we may not have picked up on during initial viewing. Also thank you for the extra bonus of Prince’s song at the end. Keep on being fantastic!

I loved this movie as a teen and haven’t revisited it in so long, but catching up with your show during quarantine led me to rewatch it with a new eye. Checking out the article on Jstor, too. I am still in awe of that title sequence. Thank you so much for talking about this modern classic!
